08:51 pm - Unwigged and Unplugged You are about to be very jealous...
Mike and I went to Unwigged and Unplugged last night - an acoustical show by our favorite rockers, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, otherwise known as Spinal Tap and The Folksmen. Two hours of some of my favorite songs!
They threw in a few video clips, including Spinal Tap's debut on The TV Show and fan-made videos of some of their songs. They read aloud a memo from the censors in preparation for airing This is Spinal Tap on TV. That took a while. My favorites, not surprisingly, were Stonehenge (complete with a background video of troll dolls dancing around a Stonehenge miniature) and Big Bottom, played with only one bass and lots of fingers snapping. I'll never cease to impressed by the talent in these three men. I think it's be fun to see them plugged in and wigged, too, though.

09:51 am - It's snowing again We already have a few more inches on top of the 9 or 10 inches we already had! Really, I don't mind being stuck at home - we have cable, food, lots of stuff to do. This is really getting out of hand, though! It is supposed to warm up by Saturday, and turn to rain, but I have a feeling the snow will be with us awhile...

09:11 am - Snow, snow, and more snow In the last week, we've had three separate snowstorms. Last Saturday, we got 4 or 5 inches, a good amount for Seattle. Our private road was impassable for me driving (even with traction tires, my little rear-wheel-drive truck won't do icy hills), but I have two good legs, so I walked to the bus stop to get to work. No big deal, it took a little longer to get to work.
By Wednesday morning, it looked much better, a lot of the snow had melted, and most of the packed ice on the roads was gone. But another storm was on the way, and it hit Thursday morning during commute time. Yes, this time the bus ride took 2 hours and 45 minutes, most of that from Burien to downtown Seattle. When I had left the house, it was a bare dusting of snow. When Mike got up around 11, this is what they found:

So I stayed home Friday, and as a third storm was moving in, received word of parties being canceled for the weekend. Yesterday afternoon this new storm moved in, and brought what looks like 3 or 4 more inches of snow on top of what we have from last week. So here we are, two kitties with cabin-fever (because they usually spend most of their days outside), and high-energy dog, and two bored people, snowed in. Well, we can probably drive somewhere in Mike's truck, but it's still quite a trip on our snow-packed roads.
I think this is the perfect time for DVDs of TV series I haven't seen, like Lost. Maybe Mike can drive me to a video store...
As a side note, Mike and I each have new blogs: http://www.mikesinkula.com http://www.bettycrotchitt.com
I'll still be using livejournal, though.
Hope you all have a great holiday!

05:59 pm - Thanksgiving 2008 We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with Yvonne and Fabien visiting. They got in Wednesday night, and headed back to Chicago on Sunday morning, but we managed to fit in the Glass Museum, the Seattle Library, the Space Needle and the Pacific Science Center Lucy exhibit.
We had some of our friends over for Thanksgiving dinner at our house. Follow the link to Mike's blog for pictures:

Next year, we'll all crash Tucson, and hang with Bridget for Thanksgiving!

07:29 pm - Halloween Pictures This Halloween, we went to an awesome party. Mike and I dressed up as modern Neanderthals, and we succeeded at fooling most of our friends. Though admittedly it's kind of sad when you're friends walk right by you at a party... :(
Enjoy the pics!

07:37 pm - Garden and Floor Lookie!

Not much longer! I have to pull one up occasionally, just to see how it's going. It's getting really hard waiting for harvest...
We finally got our floors done! Pets and people had essentially ruined our light-colored carpet, and I was set on getting laminate floors in this summer for Martha and Joe's visit. We had it done by Lowes, and they did have to fill some uneven spots on the floor before installing the laminate. We're very happy with the result, though Summer is finding that she has no traction anymore, and we have to be careful that she doesn't develop any "floor issues". We only did the living room and hall. It was too expensive to do the bedrooms, so I'll just have to get the carpets professionally cleaned soon.

09:03 pm - Furry 5k Well, I did it.
Summer and I are going to walk for the Seattle Animal Shelter's Furry 5K next weekend. If you care to pledge or donate some funds, here's a link:

Hopefully, I will get some pictures to post.
In other news, the container garden is doing well - I thinned my carrots today, which was a little sad. All those green sprouts made me feel accomplished... A couple of my peas have finally spouted, and I have more cilantro than I know what to do with - why did I plant cilantro?

07:36 am - The Garden I started a container garden this year, and I set it all up last weekend. Here are some pics. I am going to take pics every so often to see how much they'e growing. This year is an experiment of sorts, to see if I have what it takes to do this every year:
Tomato and some flowers:

Chives and some carrots seeds in front (you can't see them - they're really small):

My Walla Wall a onions and lettuce (which I've havested a bunch since the pic was taken):

The earth box has basil, cilantro, rosemary, catnip and two cucumber plants:

The catnip used to be bigger, but one of my cats (I'm assuming) ate most of the plant the night I planted it. They left one tailing branch. It's starting to grow back, though:

I started some peas in the earthbox, but they got dug up by some creature. I'm going to get some more soil today, and restart some seeds in small containers. If all this works out, I may try some new stuff next year. So far so good!
Dad, what are you growing? Yvonne told me you have a conatine garden.

06:10 pm - More Projects These are some baby bibs I was inspired to make for an expecting friend, and a purse for Lena. The purse pattern is from The Happy Hooker, and it was so easy that I'm sure I'll make more. I found the jolly roger chart online, but the rest of the bib pattern in essentially freeform.

Sissy wanted to pose, too...

06:42 pm - Busy Weekend It looks like update time for everyone, so here's mine!
Our 2nd annual wrestlemania party was a success, and apparently mini meatballs simmered in beer and barbecue sauce will be on the menu of every party we ever have ever again - very popular. Unfortunately, the matches all ended with the bad guys winning! What kind of wrestlemania is that? Still, much fun, and Summer was very good what with having a dozen loud people crowding the living room and shouting at the TV...
Summer is back in school - we are going through basic obedience again, and our first day was on Saturday. I've decided to move her towards a Canine Good Citizen certification, and so we are going to advance through all the training available. Maybe even do some agility or weight-pulling. This has come about because a group has been organized in Seattle to try and ban pit bulls, and place severe restrictions on pit bulls already living here. I am getting involved in a group to fight this, but I want my dog to represent the best of the breed, too.
At work, I have had my own office now for a month, and it has many windows. It's small and very very cold, but it's private and nice otherwise. It'll warm up nicely once summer rolls in, but I may have to get a space heater if spring continues the way it's been.
I will post more about my current crochet projects later: including the Jolly Roger Baby Bib...

08:46 am - I'm back on the road $3,000 later.
But, I'm not riding the bus anymore - I think that's the "priceless" moment missing from my last post. It was all right in some ways, but it took an hour more time each way commuting, and I just can't do that to myself. Maybe I'll part-time bus it, if gas prices really skyrocket, but right now, the bus fare evens out with the cost of gas for me, so losing 2 hours of personal time doesn't even save me money.
Side note: my "g" button is pooping out or something, so I have to go back and read "if as prices really skyrocket" and "the cost of as for me". Kind of amusin.
I had a second hypnotherapy session the other night, to combat the stress of the past week, and additional cigarette cravings. It went well, and I feel much better. I do believe this really helps me, and just spendin time before the hypno part talking with my friend - this is the closest I've ever done to counseling, and I enjoy it so much, sometimes I want to take the rest of you and sit you down with her for an hour. Really, if everyone spent an hour with Inga, the worl would be a better place.

09:13 am - The Damage One used warranty-less transmission: $1600.00 Labor to install transmission: $600.00 One new clutch to go with new transmission: $200.00
I can't think of anything "priceless" to follow... It just kind of sucks. I mean, it's a Ranger!
Mike and I decided to go with the repair for now. It's not a good time to go car shopping, or to figure out what to do with my truck if we didn't get it running. This way, we have my truck as a trade-in when we do go shopping for a newer vehicle. After they replace the transmission, the mechanics will look at all the stupid little broken things, too. Like the gas guage and the door locks. Maybe they can do something about the oil leak, too. Clean the carpet? At least I had vacuumed it out the other day. After 3 months, I finally cleaned out my ashtray, and wiped the ashy dust from the interior, so at least it looked relatively clean inside.

06:18 pm - Catastrophic Transmission Failure Doesn't sound too good, does it? In fact, it sounds like vehicular euthanasia may be called for.
I'll find out the repair cost tomorrow. I think it's likely I'll be buying a bus pass soon, though. I'm just trying not to think about what happens when Catastrophic Transmission Failure occurs during freeway-speed travel, instead of in the parking lot of Fred Meyer....

06:20 pm Mike and I caucused today. It was interesting, and kind of fun, to go do this. We were among 14 people from our precinct (which were amon several hundred from our legislative district), and we got to select three delegates among us to move on to the next level of caucusing. Since most of us were for Obama, there were more than enough people willing to be delegates, so I didn't volunteer. I think it's an interesting process, though, and I wonder if I can attend the next level just as a spectator.
It was also fun to meet neihbors of like mind, and to realize that we lived among some interesting and intelligent people. Always good to be reminded of that when your immediate neighbors are not-so-ideal. How did the process work for the rest of you? In Washington, for the Democratic party you had to caucus to count, and for the Republican party, it will be 50% from the caucus and 50% from the primary ballot results.

12:51 pm - Update 8 Days! Smoke-free... So far, I'm doing okay. I had a hypno-therapy session with my friend Inga last week, and that helped tremendously. I can't believe how motivated and inspired I felt after it. I'm going crochet-crazy with amigurumi-style animals, and my next project is to make some of our pets, and our friends' pets. I'll start with Summer, and see how it turns out.
We had our holiday party for work, and much fun it was. With my bonus, Mike and I finally got I-pods. Mine's red! I'm so behind the times that yes I do think this is awesome high-tech, and it has games on it too! Later to day, I'll start loading it with music, but for know, I'm going to start on my Summer doll.
